Welcome to our Tokyo Office website.
Our Firm, Hauptman Ham, LLP, (HH) is a medium sized American intellectual property firm headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, a five minute walk to the United States Patent & Trademark Office. We have about 85 staff members, of which thirty are registered U. S. patent attorneys and agents specializing in all areas of technology. We are ranked 11th in the United States among all U.S. patent firms by Juristat. We also have a large office in Kudanshita with ten patent professional and legal assistants.
As the founding partner, I have been an active patent attorney since 1980 when I graduated from Franklin Pierce Law Center and joined our predecessor firm, Lowe, King, Price & Becker. A majority of our clients were Japanese companies, and benrishi and translation firms, so I have had the opportunity to work on behalf of Japanese interests for over thirty years. I have been so attracted to Japanese culture and life that I opened an office in Shinagawa in 2010. Our office began with two people (one benrishi and myself) and today has expanded to include about ten people, most of whom are native Japanese with advanced training in U. S. patent prosecution. I live in Tokyo with my wife, Kana Yasue Hauptman, where we spend seven months of the year. One of my partners, Josh Pritchett, who was a Primary U.S. Patent Examiner for ten years before joining our Firm in 2012, also spends about 25% of his time practicing in our Kudanshita office.
Based on these experiences, we recognize the importance of working closely with our clients and our mission is to understand their business goals and provide optimal patent and other intellectual property protection in line with their interests. Important to the fulfillment of this objective is to enable our clients to communicate efficiently. Our Kudanshita office permits clients to communicate exclusively in Japanese if they wish and to receive responses to most inquiries the same business day. We are the only U.S. patent prosecution boutique firm to have a fully functioning Tokyo office. We accomplish this through a team of highly trained Japanese legal assistants, led by Hiroki Kawasaki, our Office Manager, all of whom have over ten years of experience working with Japanese benrishi firms and translation companies in support of U. S. patent prosecution activities on behalf of Japanese clients. Our patent prosecution team in Tokyo includes four patent professionals who are actively onsite in Kudanshita under the coordination of Mr. Kenji Ohba, our General Manager of the Tokyo office and with over thirty years of active experience in U. S. patent prosecution while working for NGB Corporation (1984-2000) and a well known Tokyo based benrishi firm (2000-2015). Our Tokyo teams independently perform all services from filing through prosecution and issuance, yet are fully supported and cross checked by our Alexandria based professionals.
Another important part of our business philosophy is that the best possible patent protection at the lowest reasonable cost is best achieved by educating our clients in all aspects of U.S. practice so we can both enjoy improved professional communication. To provide such educational opportunities in Japan, we have developed the world famous PADIAS course which is taught by myself and my partners in our lecture hall based in Kudanshita. The PADIAS course is also taught worldwide. I developed the PADIAS course in 1994 while an Adjunct Professor at Franklin Pierce Law Center to provide beginning to advanced instruction in patent application preparation and review, as well as all aspects of prosecution. 弊所創設パートナーである私は、１９８０年にフランクリン・ピアス・ロー・センターを卒業し、弊所の前身であるLowe, King, Price & Becker事務所に入所して以来、特許弁護士として活動して参りました。お客様の大半が、日本企業、特許事務所、翻訳会社であったため、日本のお客様の代理経験は、３０年以上に及びます。そして、日本文化と日本の生活様式に魅入られ、２０１０年に品川に東京オフィスを開設しました。このオフィスは、当初２名（弁理士１名と私）でしたが、こんにち約１０名ものスタッフを擁するまでに成長しました。現在の東京オフィスのスタッフのほとんどは日本人で、最新の米国特許実務の訓練を受けています。私は東京に居を構え、日本人の妻佳奈とともに、１年のうち７か月を東京で過ごしています。２０１２年の弊所入所までの１０年間米国主任特許審査官を務めた、私のパートナーの１人であるジョシュア プリチェットも、九段下の東京オフィスに約２５％滞在し、日本のお客様のために専門サービスを提供しています。
